Commitment is an act where a man or a woman is giving himself or herself to another person or to some human activity or project. Such a sphere of human life is not normally considered pious or religious and yet there is a dimension to the experience of commitment which is profoundly religious. Who do you think in history has lived a life of true service, commitment and dedication? Why?
Not every human act is a ‘committed’ act. Acts of commitment in human life are special acts requiring mature living beyond the superficial level of existence. They occur rarely and it is possible that a human being spend his/her whole life without ever attaining commitment. He or she may live without ever dedicating himself or herself to anything or anyone. His or her marriage may satisfy all the necessary legal requirements but lack any deep personal involvement. He or she may spend much time at a job but it remains an activity with which he or she never personally identifies. Commitment is missing. Who is the person in your family, school, Church, community or society whom you consider courageous in actually giving himself or herself to a relationship, career, profession, work, project, or to any engagement? Why?
