1. The Preferential Option for the Poor is a Christian obligation which is NOT optional of the Christian
faith. 2. Text that shows Jesus who identified Himself with the least, the poor - “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt. 25:40) 3. The right order of things in God’s creation is that human beings are superior to temporal goods. 4. Universal Destination of Goods - a principle that states “God destined the earth and all its contents for all people so that all created things would be shared by all under the guidance of justice tempered with charity” 5. Pope John Paul II -said: "the goods of this world are equally meant for all ... Private property, in fact, is under a social mortgage." 6. CENTISSIMUS ANNUS - It is a document that says “God gave the earth to the whole human race for the sustenance of all its members, without excluding or favoring anyone.” 7. The Church’s social doctrine was formed over the course of time, through the numerous interventions of the Magisterium on social issues. 8. 4 major sources of Church Social Doctrine: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, Human reason, and Human experience. 9. The Catholic Social Teachings are the latest in a long line of Church’s teaching about social issues. There were no specific social encyclicals written before 1891. 10. Faith and reason represent the two cognitive paths of the Church’s social doctrine. 11. The Church’s Social teachings are NOT primarily technical solutions to specific problems. 12. Gospel text that condemns clearly those who use their position as a cover for their treatment of others: - “hypocrites! …You who are like whitewashed tombs that look handsome on the outside but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all kinds of corruption. In the same way you appear to people on the outside like good honest men but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” (Mt. 23: 23-24,28) 13. The Church in the Philippines today understands participation in political activity as an integral part of living the Christian faith. 14. GAUDIUM ET SPES (G.S) - It is a document that says: “The joy and hope, the grief and anguish of the men of our time, especially of those who are poor or afflicted in any way, are the joy and hope, the grief and anguish of the followers of Christ as well.” 15. Human Dignity and Equality - Principle that respects the Dignity of Conscience and Freedom of Choice of Educators, parents, and of employers; respects the human person as the “image of God” which includes not only his or her soul but his or her corporeal being. 16. The predominant experience of the church on poverty; b.) A local church history of disinterest and even disdain for the poor; c.) It is theologically and biblically sound 23. The phrase “Preferential Option for the Poor” (POP) was originated in 1979 at Puebla, Mexico 24. Why the Preferential Option for the Poor is not Optional? (article)- It is an article that tells stories of self-sacrifice and courage of neighbors who saved one another from harm’s way. - It is an article that tells the story of the three elderly women rescued by a high-school boy who swam back and forth to their flooded apartment and carried each of them to safety on his back, and then left them in search of others. A week later, his body was discovered downstream. - It is an article that says that an option for the poor does not mean that God loves poor people more than the rich people. - It is an article that assumes two classes of people in the world: the rich and the poor. The rich do not worry about whether they will eat tomorrow. The poor do. 25. Justice in the World - a document that says “Christian love of neighbor and justice cannot be separated. For love implies an absolute demand for justice, namely, a recognition of the dignity and rights of one’s neighbor. Justice attains its inner fullness only in love.” 26. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam - It means that regardless of who we are, or what we do, all that we do should focus on seeking and serving “the greater glory of God,” the God Who created us and Who sustains us. 27. This process of discernment calls us to recognize and then choose good and reject evil; and to experience the presence of God in all of creation. 28. Case - 1
Florence Nightingale is a dedicated woman. She was the founder of Nursing profession. She dedicated her life to her work as an army nurse. She did not enter the profession because of wealth that she can get, she did it out of passion and love to serve humanity. She is a woman for others. She faces the pain and struggles of a nurse and conquers her fears, doubts and anxiety just to help the soldiers who were dying.
Case - 2
Former CHED Chairman Romulo Neri is an Atenean who graduated in Ateneo High School ADMU in 1966. He courageously confirmed an attempt by former COMELEC Chairman Benjamin Abalos to bribe him into endorsing the government’s $329 million broadband deal with the ZTE Corp. of China. He quoted Abalos telling him “Sec may 200 ka dito” when he was still the NEDA Director General. However, Neri would hide behind “executive privilege” to dodge questions which implicated President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Case - 3
Sumilao, Bukidnon has an extensive tract of land with an area of 144-hectare land which is owned by a single family who was not actually the ones tilling the land. In 1994 the said land was placed under the Comprehensive Land Reform Program of the government for distribution to the farmers supposedly tilling the land. However, an Executive order (EO) was issued the following year removing the same from the program and converting it to agro-industrial use. The said EO was questioned before the Supreme Court (SC) but on April 24, 1998, the SC affirmed the validity of the EO. The SC even subsequently ruled that the protesting farmers are not real parties in-interest and were not entitled to the land since it was no longer under CARP thereby paving the way for its sale to SMFI, a subsidiary of SMC, which started developing the property into an agro-industrial estate. The aggrieved farmers dramatized their grievance by walking 1700 kilometers to get the sympathy and attention of the nation. The farmers’ cause indeed appears valid and politically correct enough to impel Malacanang into voiding the 1995 EO and once more placing the said property under land reform allegedly because the conditions for the conversion of the land into agro-industrial use were violated.
